Whoa, this is a hard movie to review. It is filled with action, odd characters, and quite a bit of realistic and gruesome violence. Most guys are going to be drawn in right in at the beginning when confronted with an entire roomful of unbelievably beautiful, totally nude, Eastern European prostitutes. The visuals of all kinds never really let up in this movie, especially since it was filmed in interesting areas of Europe. The lead female assassin incidentally, a much older and more matronly woman than the eye candy on the cover is downright terrifying one could even say castrating with <more>
respect to men in her utter ruthlessness and efficiency. Take the warning seriously about there being some pretty graphic violence in this film, because I'm not ridiculously squeamish, yet I found myself pretty shocked. Most of the action actually seems fairly realistic, at least until the very end, at which point the filmmakers, as is common, get carried away with some physically unlikely or downright impossible stuff. My attention never flagged during this movie, since it struck me as being so far out of left field that I wasn't sure what to make of it. If this kind of film experience became more common, I'm sure that I wouldn't rate this as highly, but it's current uniqueness, at least for me personally, gets it full marks.
The movie opens with a high level party which includes many nude call girls. Cat Paz Vega , one of the escorts at the party who managed to keep her clothes on, witnesses the killing of multiple guests, including other girls, is on the lam. She steals a car and phone from two Americans who provide the comic relief for the film Alphonso McAuley and Scott Mechlowicz . McAuley talks Scott into being a detective, "C'mon man. Be a dic." They open up an office in a porno theater with secretary D.L. Hughley. The nasty killing incident was caught on tape. Cat steals the hard drive from <more>
a computer before she leaves the party. An assassin, Helen aka Virginia Wolf also goes by Emily Bronte , is called in to kill her. Played by Janet McTeer she reminded me of Helen Mirren in "Red". She has a dry humor to her as she is a polite "Mary Poppins" killer. In one scene she apologizes to a man she has tortured for "taking up so much of his morning...but you do understand my need to be thorough." She also has her own theme music Zombies' "She's not there" which is part of the fun.The whole world is searching for the missing Paz. Our hero detectives decide to make her their first case. Paz scams her way across Europe funny how guys want to help a beautiful woman sporting legs and cleavage and from TV news shows she realizes the killings involved an important US government official. The movie creates wonderful characters. It has numerous funny lines and some with sexual innuendos, for instance:Hughley claims the shark ate his wife piece by piece. McAuley asks, "Didn't he eat her whole?" Hughley, "Yeah. He ate that too." While this simple juvenile humor might not work or seem crude in other movies, it was hilarious when they did it, primarily because they didn't harp on crude humor. Even the slap stick type humor was funny because it was quick and they didn't dwell on it. This is a 5 star movie even without the nudity. The movie works better as a comedy than an action film. Dasa Zivkovic who represented Montenegro in the Miss Universe pageant is Jieva, a girl that McAuley meets on the beach in Montenegro.Excellent writing and direction. McAuley as a Scotsman, painfully impressive.Full frontal nudity "Debbie, Susi, Bubbles, Mila Savina"...not Paz , sex, good use of Zombie cover track, some quick torture scenes.
Great entertainment and even better action sequences (by xandycaven)
Contracted assassins, government corruption, high octane action scenes; Cat Run has it all. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this movie as it provided exactly what I wanted out of this flick, entertainment. Recommended to anyone is who seeking an all around great action thriller. It also contains one very gorgeous actress, Ms. Paz Vega Spanglish , who plays the main character of a beautiful escort. Movie contains elements of comedy, action, slight gore, and of course beautiful women. A must see for anyone who wants to sit down and enjoy a flick and be nothing more than entertained........
Cat Run/Janet McTeer (by Maryjnberry)
Loved the concept of the female "seasoned"assassin played by Janet McTeer! She really made the movie stand out, so matter of fact about her various episodes of murder, she stole the movie! Janet was also terrific in the movie series White Queen, playing Jacquetta Woodville, the mother of the British Plantagenous queen, both of who had serious witch talents. I am very sure there wouldn't be a 2nd Cat Run if it hadn't been for Janet's performance! The story about the hostess/hooker running away with the hard drive has been done before, with quite notable actors, but was not <more>
as unique as this story, the characters being slightly out of the ordinary, like Cat's father the pig farmer. The two actors playing the private detectives make it more of a comedy of errors than a serious story!
Proves reviews can be misleading.... (by callahans20)
Before I watched this, I had never heard of Cat Run, or John Stockwell. I was bored on a Sunday night and this was sitting in one of my Netflix queues for weeks, so I thought, what the heck, let's give it a go. How bad can it be? For the first 30 minutes or so, I was thrown by the number of character introductions made with graphics so I distracted myself with my iPad only half-watching it. But then I started finding myself getting more and more drawn in by Janet McTeer's, Helen Bingham, as cold-blooded an assassin as you will ever see. Plus, she's kinda classy. This is really <more>
her movie, and without her, the story would be only average. I loved the line, "We'll always have Angola." The two private detectives are more comic relief than main characters, but the kilt dance made me laugh out loud for about 5 minutes. The supporting characters are numerous and familiar, which helps the story along. Paz Vega is pure window dressing.Cat Run certainly won't win any awards, and most of the characters are rather predictable, but it was still great fun if you just don't take it too seriously. By the time the movie ended, I was thoroughly engrossed so maybe it helps to pay less attention in the beginning where the story truly bogs down. Perhaps tighter editing there would have aided the initial story flow. All in all, Cat Run was better than a lot of reviewers give it credit for. You'd have to be a real movie snob not to enjoy it.
It knows it's B movie, and it gets gold. (by catimeup)
Normally smaller budget or made for tv kind of movies really do nothing for me. This movie worked. The way these do work for me is taking themselves for what they are, and by that I mean not serious. How to do that...sprinkle in some gratuity, pinches of comedy, teaspoon of "how do we get out of this", don't bother measuring the action, just add that until it goes bang. Think of it like action movie cheese, all the ingredients needed for a good action flick. All those old classic action films and westerns, you see enough of them you begin to know the way it goes down. This movie <more>
gets away with utilizing a lot of what we have already seen because it doesn't fail to deliver the goods with extra toppings. The movie doesn't try and sell itself off as high quality multimillion dollar budget movie. Instead it delivers what we can expect from lower budget movies. Mistakes, tom foolery, and more importantly that intangible feeling you get when you watch people overdue it but get away with it because deep down you know this was fun for them. This movie does have some draw backs, but honestly i'll save that for people who can sit through a b movie on a regular basis to figure out. Overall I was pleased and this is something i'd watch if I was inclined to satisfy my urge for a cheesy but not too cheesy action movie.
